Between Sundays: A Year of Transforming Devotionals for the Toughest Days of Your Week
Published in Hardcover by Howard Publishing (October, 1998)
Author: Shawn Craig
Average review score:

A Great Way To Start My Day!
I was needing a devotion that I could do in the morning before my "official" work and school day started. This book has been perfect for such a time. It has helped me to stay focused during my time with the Lord, and keeps me from getting side-tracked. It has given me good things to think about during my day and it is a great way to start my day with a "full cup." I really enjoy the Saturday devotions, too, as they have specific questions to ponder.(And they are great journaling topics!)

Wonderful personal devotions
It took me a long time as a Christian to come to terms with the idea that the days between Sundays were the tough ones, and that I needed more than an hour on Sunday at church to be an effective Christian and have a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. If I'd had this book sooner, I'd have had a better handle on the concept.

Mr. Craig's devotions (he's the "Craig" in the CCM group Phillips, Craig and Dean) are written with a friendly, 'close-up' style that makes them very accessible to the average reader; I think this would be a good book for a teen group to use.

It's definitely a worthwhile way to grow closer in your daily walk with the Lord.

Black Man's Religion: Can Christianity Be Afrocentric?
Published in Paperback by Intervarsity Press (May, 1996)
Authors: Glenn Usry, Craig S. Keener, and Glen Usry
Average review score:

Should be required reading for W.A.S.P.'s like me
When we look way way back into Christian history we usually look to the mid-east and the missionary journeys of Paul into Turkey and Greece, etc. BUT few realize the mighty missionary work in Africa the first 10-15 years after Christ's resurrection. Usry and Keener give us an eye-opening look at the fact that Christianity was established in Africa [Egypt and Ethiopia] and spread like wildfire throughout North and East Africa-in fact Christianity became better entrenched, more united, less 'tainted' and more enduring quicker than when it spread northward and they show us Christianity MOST definitely should be considered Afro-centric. The first 3 chapters are worth the price of the book. I wish EVERY white preacher [like me] would read this. Keener [a white preacher in a mainly black denomination] is the author of several thorough and gifted volumes on marriage, the Holy Spirit and the Gospel of Matthew [published by IVP] and he brings his thoroughness here as well.
Usry's [and Kenner's] testimonies are great!Their historical documentation is great and their line of thought in refuting black Muslim's arguments that Christianity enslaved and brought down black Africa is absolutely stunning. Islam didn't even exist until well after Christianity and was forced upon the people at sword-point. Black Man's Religion is superb, I highly recommend it for an eye-opening thought-provoking read-especially for Southern W.A.S.P.s like me. Also read anything by Albert Raboteau [about African-American religious experience] and the fascinating story of Coptic [African/Egyptian] Christianity. More and more and more it is very clear that Christianity is so ORIENTAL [i.e. of the mid-east, southwest Asia and North/East Africa]-American Christianity is still in its infancy in comparison.

BLACK MAN'S RELIGION
I would like to thank the two authors Gleen Usry & Craig S. Keener for writting Black Man's Religion. I truely enjoyed reading the book. I had to read the book for a class. I feel that everybody should read this book. I would like to thank the authors for writting such a great book.

I LOVE IT
This book is a telling of one of my very favorite episodes, and I love having it around when I can't watch the show. If your favorite Powerpuff Girl is Bubbles, you'll be glad to see her featured in this book. She's just so darn cute, and her quest to become "hardcore" is hilarious!

A Cabinetmaker's Notebook (Woodworker's Library (Fresno, Calif.).)
Published in Paperback by Linden Publishing (March, 2000)
Authors: James Krenov and Craig McArt
Average review score:

The Woodworker's Classic
A Cabinet Maker's Notebook! It is the book that shook me awake to the possibility that woodworking can be a means of clear expression and personal growth. My own copy is not from this edition, but was printed in 1976. It was given me by friends that knew my interest in woodworking and wanted to make sure that I got off to the right start.

Krenov is the most influential of American woodworkers. No woodworker's library is complete without this classic.

The most influencial modern book on cabinetmaking
First published in 1975, The Cabinetmaker's Notebook is a modern classic for those who wish to persue cabinetmaking as a mode of sensitive self-expresion. That may seem like a mouthful, but you either build cabinets because you need to store things, or for some less practical reason. As Red Green says "If your wife doesn't find you handsome, she should at least find you handy". That is one reason beyond the practical, A kind of I want to impress people stage. But when you get beyond that; the house is full of furniture, and your wife actually wishes you would come in from the shop once in a while, what keeps you out there? If it is a desire to do your best work, with the best tools and wood you can find then this book may be for you.

Why do I call it the most influencial book of its kind? Well partly because it influenced me, but it also struck a cord when it first came out in the seventies and the woodworking revival was underway. It is pretty much as valid today as then. Krenov, who grew up in the U.S., wrote these books while living in Sweden. They proved so popular that a school was created stateside at which he still teaches. Krenov's insights are of some use to people who persue other crafts.

The most likely volumes to share shelf space with this and other Krenov books are; George Nakashia The Soul of a Tree (worth it for the pictures alone) and Sam Maloof Woodworker (ditto)

Choshu in the Meiji Restoration

Chosu on Choshu!
If you want to understand how Japan catapulted from being a nation of feudal swordsman to being a a world power that beat the stuffing out of Russia in just 50 years... then you need to study the Meiji Restoration. If you want to understand the Meiji Restoration... then you need to study a bit about Choshu, the fuedal principality that was most responsible for making it all happen. Craig's magisterial study is still the monograph on the subject, even today.

Choshu!
One simply cannot begin to understand Japan without understanding this turbulent period in its history and one simply cannot being to understand this period without studying the history of a few key feudal domains that spear-headed the major changes in Japanese history. Craig's work remains the definitive one on the subject, in spite of its age.

Cliff Hanger (Martha's Vineyard Mystery No 4)
Published in Paperback by Avon (October, 1994)
Authors: Philip R. Craig and Phillip R. Craig
Average review score:

The title describes the action.
I have read every book in this series, but this is my favorite. We are treated to the usual ambiance of Martha's Vineyard (Craig really makes me want to go there!) with fishing trips followed by gourmet blue-fish and crab dinners, but this also includes some real suspense and action with our hero being pursued by a mysterious bad guy. If you want to be convinced to read the rest of the series, read this one first!

An excellent read
Yes it is out of print, but look for it in used bookstores. In fact look for the whole series. These are very good light reading. The characters are good and the stories keep you interested. I no longer fish, but I enjoy reading about these characters who do love fishing, cooking, nude sunbathing, and other island type lifestyles. I don't think a lifestyle of this type would be for everyone, and I know it's not for me, I enjoy air conditioning, television, and the middle of the country, although a visit to Martha's Vineyard isn't beyond hope.

Find all of the out of print ones if you can, visit the library and find those you can and then plunge in and enjoy.

The Coming Chastisement
Published in Paperback by Queenship Pub Co (December, 2000)
Author: Craig Driscoll
Average review score:

Sensible advice to live by in these times...
Brother Craig Driscoll's book "The Coming Chastisement" is well worth reading. It is a short little book, but packed with useful insights and advice. The first section, "Understanding Suffering", offers an excellent explanation of the value of suffering that is brief and to the point. The rest of the book talks about the Three Days Darkness and the Chastisement as it has been discussed by numerous visionaries. Brother Craig's advice is good regardless of what the future holds: repent, forgive others, love God and your neighbor, and be prepared.

Very thought provoking, makes you think.
I felt this book was not alarming but makes you want to prepare in a sensible manner, and not just live with the feeling of what will be will be.

The Coming Of The Holy One Of Israel
Published in Library Binding by Publishment (01 February, 1994)
Author: Craig L. Tholson
Average review score:

The Arm of the Lord Shall Be Revealed to All Nations
The 2nd Coming of the Lord has always been an interest to me. Of the numerous books both Christian and Mormon that I have read on the subject, none have had more impact in changing my own paradigm, nor have any opened or unsealed the secrets that are contained in last days prophecy.

The message and content of this book should make most saints rejoice to know that their Lord and Savior will be here personally to watchover and lead the "great and marvelous work" of the Lord.

Craig does an outstanding job of showing both mormon and christian alike the scriptural evidence testifying to the latter-day work of the Christ to gather in His sheep. Once you begin to read the testimonies contained in the scriptures of Christ's latter-day ministry, you'll begin to see this theme all throughout the scriptures and prophecies.

This book does require an open mind and heart. The ablility to set aside some closely held paradigms. However, if the reader will do so and just test the material by the fruit thereof, there is a new world out there and Tholson's book helps to open up some of the myteries of God's plan and of His character.

I consider this book a must read for every Mormon and Christian. If you like the works Avraham Gileadi, then you'll appreciate the work that Craig has done, as It goes beyond and really answers the questions to just who the Davidic Servant really is.

As I said earlier this work and news that Christ will return again born of a women to perform His latter-day ministry should be joy to the hearts of the people. How many of us have read the accounts of Jesus' life in the Four Gospels and not time traveled back in time, wishing that we would have been alive during that time to witness his ministry among the Jews? Most of us would say that we would have followed him and known who he truly was. Well, no need to day-dream because our time is coming and we will also be put to the test.

Jesus Comes to Earth: Don't Miss the Sequel
Until I read Craig Tholson's "The Holy One of Israel", I thought I knew everything there was to know about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Man--was I wrong!

Using extensive quotes from traditional Christian sources the Old and New Testaments as well as Mormon sacred works such as the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants, Tholson slowly builds a solid case in support of his assertion that not only will Jesus Christ return a second time to planet earth 'in clouds of glory'; but prior to such an apocalyptic event, he will quietly appear among his brothers here on earth to fulfill yet another earthly mission on behalf of the Father.

The author suggests this second appearance of Jesus Christ will be a case of reincarnation because he will come to earth this second time via being born of a woman.

While the idea of a reincarnated Jesus will push the envelope to the breaking point for many believers, Tholson does not draw upon any New Age material to support his claim.

One thing I particularly enjoyed about the book was that, although I am not yet totally convinced Jesus will appear via reincarnation as the author suggests--still, the expectancy that Jesus will take an active part in the latter latter-day guidance of his people, here on earth and in the flesh, seems overwhelming.

Tholson digs deep into extensive scriptural passages and brings them into the light, demanding that we look to see what is really being said. 'Line by line and precept by precept', he builds a case that an open-minded reader simply must take seriously.

Indeed, we learn that a great deal is at stake, for the returned Jesus of "The Holy One of Israel" is to lead a remnant of true believers to safety on the eve of the awful destruction of Bablyon.

According to Tholson, those who will not hear the voice of the Lord during his second earthy sojourn will perish.

It is still somewhat difficult for this reviewer to grasp the idea of a reincarnated Jesus. But it seems certain that, if and when Jesus does reappear among his human fellows again as one of them, many of those who will recognize and honor the Lord in his latter-day earthly mission will have been helped along the way at some point by reading this book.

One of the articles of faith of the Mormon Church says that if anything be of good report, then we ought to investigate it.

May this review stand as a 'good report' of this wonderful soul-awakening book "The Holy One of Israel" by Craig Tholson.

And now...the rest is up to you.
